flare, is this the reason u were so bent on getting your own place in shanghai?
The hard-boiled bachelorette, Ma Nuo, has gone on to become one of China’s most recognizable bai jin nu. Marry for love? Fat chance, said the material girl: “I would rather cry in a BMW than smile on the back of my boyfriend’s bicycle.“
“My parents think it’s important…. They would rather I marry someone who owns his own property,” said Wei Na, 28, an advertising saleswoman in Beijing. “It just makes you feel more safe if a man has his own place. I think most women feel the same way.”
this is significant because the avg cost of a 1000 sq ft apartment is $274k, which is 22 times the average annual income of someone in beijing according to the article. i didn’t get that feeling from my recent visit to shanghai. i talked with a girl who was strongly conflicted about leaving a job for another job exactly like her own for twice the salary b/c of her friendship with her boss, but of course, my one example might not be indicative of any wider sentiment. with the gender imbalace in china, girls can afford to be choosier b/c they are a more valuable commodity than in years past.
apparently, many of the abc guys over there are dating multiple girls simultaneously. if there is a shortage of women, it’s not noticed much by the expat abcs, and economics is an important part of that. chinese girls know their economic value has increased, and will look first for guys who can “afford” their affections. this disproportionately benefits the expats who are among the top wage earners. i imagine there is resentment among the local guys who view the expats as market dominant minorities. a mitigating factor, however, is the fact that these expats are still ethnically chinese. i’m not sure white or black expats have many mitigating factors.
luckily for those literal poor bastards in urban china, gov’t policy may save the day. a source in the chinese tax bureau said housing property boom may soon end due to a tax the gov’t is considering to slow the rise in prices and inflation. whether the tax is actually levied may not matter as just the threat has been enough to put potential buyers off.
finally, it says something about the psychological fitness of a region where some women boast of their willingness to suffering mental trauma for riches over happiness. what else are these women willing to put up with? what if he can afford several women? are they willing to put up with that? will they stay with a man that beats them just as long as he gives them money for clothes and handbags? to some, the answer may be a resounding yes.
