Q4U (2002), Feng Mengbo

Feng Mengbo (b. 1966) is a contemporary Chinese artist known for his melding of video game culture with imagery from the Cultural Revolution. As you can probably guess, he is an obsessive online gamer.

Taxi! Taxi!

Taxi! Taxi! (1994)

Taking Mt. Doom by Strategy (1997)

A still from Game Over: Long March (1994)

Like many artworks in the contemporary Chinese art scene, some of Feng Mengbo’s art incorporate the iconic image of Mao Zedong, manipulating it ever so slightly to suit the artist’s creative expression.   I for one think there is as lot of unexplored territory when it comes to video game art.  Also, Taking Mt. The camcorder is a funny touch to the quake3-inspired piece. You never think about it when playing, that the first-person POV is like holding a camera at a certain angle while you carry a giant gun around. Maybe that’s why with a lot of games you can only hold one weapon at a time haha.
