RWBY

This is the next Monty Oum project and it looks like a novel take on fairy tales. For those that remember, he made the Deady Fantasy videos and he’s now the Red vs Blue lead animator.

The stylistic touches in this video seem new to Monty Oum, as his past work has been mostly focused on insane action scenes while this has a very distinct art direction. RWBY will have what I assume to be 4 heroines representing 4 colors – red, white, black, yellow.

R is a given for Red Riding Hood. W might be for Snow White? B for Beauty from Beauty and the Beast? Don’t have a guess at who Y would be though.

The grave is engraved with “Summer Rose Thus Kindly I Scatter” which is a reference to the Celtic Woman’s Last Rose of Summer song.

Art history book without the art

This, ladies and gentlemen, is the age we live in. The Ontario College of Art and Design has required its students to purchase a $180 Art History textbook in which it has no art. Presumably due to some type of licensing/copyright issue, they were unable to include pictures, and instead left empty boxes and a reference as to where the picture could be viewed. Publishing and selling this book took some freaking balls.

Sample page:

The thing that really gets me is that the book is called “Global Visual and Material Culture: Prehistory to 1800“. If that’s true, all the art in the book has passed into public domain.

Danger Girl Film Adaptation

Danger Girl is an American comic book series created by J. Scott Campbell and Andy Hartnell.  I’ve been a fan of Campbell’s art. Based on the casting(Milla Jovovich, Kate Beckinsale, and Sofia Vergara), it probably won’t matter too much how the movie goes, just as long as it has the key visual components. A good movie would be a bonus though.

Recent Storm

It was a dark and stormy night...click to enlarge.

As I happened to gaze out, where there was darkness, now there was light.  Through the clouds, one side blue, one side orange, both ever so bright. So I meandered out the door and decided to grab my camera to capture this site.  Soon after started continuous lightning, I scampered inside due to fright.  Hoping my palm tree lasts through the night.

The Art of Video Games

The Smithsonian is planning an art exhibit (take that Ebert) of 80 games from the past 40 years. Yes, 40! Pong arrived back in 1972.

You can vote for the games you think should be included from a pre-selected group. While I did see many of my favorite games, this selection was heavily console biased. As with any such list I can’t believe they didn’t include certain games while including others that don’t deserve a spot.

Call me biased, but they didn’t include any fighting games like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, which is really disappointing. Also missing were the original Civilization, X-com, Planescape: Torment, and Braid. Any of those games should have been included in the voting list for either their innovation and/or their art. Almost unforgivable is the absence of Pong itself, although maybe they didn’t put that up for a vote b/c it’s already going to be included.

On the other side, why they included Unreal instead of Half-Life is beyond me. The inclusion of Black Ops… really? Why devote museum space to a game that’s only a few months old and hasn’t really been tested by time? Moreover, what in Black Ops merits it’s space on such a list? It’s art is not stylized or really any different from any of the other military FPS games out there, and the gameplay is even less innovative than the art. I’m not knocking the game itself as it can be fun, but there’s nothing artistic or innovative about it.

But the list certainly did get some things right, or at least didn’t fail completely. They included Zelda, Metroid, Megaman, Doom II, FF7, Fallout & Baldur’s Gate II, Rez, Starcraft, Ikuraga, Shadow of the Colossus, WoW, Portal, and a host of others that really deserve a shot.

It’s a little strange that they decided to exclude Super Mario Bros from the list but included Pac-Man and WoW when all will be playable at the exhibit. Weird decision processes.

Lunchtime Clock

Lunchtime Clock

Pretty awesome idea, it would work as long as nobody else in the office had their own clock…or communicated with the outside world during this time. Basically it speeds up by 20% at 11am and then slows down by 20% at 11:48, giving you an extra 12 mins of lunch time.
