Shanghai dating and death traps, a simpleton’s guide on how to distinguish between the the two

My friend’s girlfriend, a Shanghainese girl, recently gave him, an ABC,  an ultimatum.  By May, my friend needs to decide whether he will marry her or not. If he decides against marriage, or if he is unsure, they will stop seeing each other by May. Last week, the girl borrowed 2k from my friend. “To pay back credit card payments” she said. This week, the girl came around with a brand new double eyelid surgery. Guess where that 2k went…When asked why she got the surgery, the girl replied, “I did it for you, so I can look prettier for you!” I suggested my friend ask for a breast implant to go along with the eye lid surgery.  When they began dating a year ago, he msned me and wrote “hey, I am really happy with this girl, she is cute and actually offered to pay for our meals!” Now he says, “One of the things I don’t like about my gf is that she never pays for anything, it really has me wondering what would happen if we get married. Would she just quit her job and sit at home all day?”

I have been seeing this girl, I stay over at her place quite often in the past month. I have my own place, but I suppose its easier and less lonely staying over with someone else. She’s Chinese, from Harbin (Northern China) region. she is cute, street smart, does house-work, has a good job. Sounds great right, well one of the problems is that she doesn’t get along at all with my English speaking friends. She does speak English herself, but the cultural differences are fairly noticeable. A few days ago she asked me to pay for rent since I have been staying over at her place so frequently. I declined, “no thanks dear” I don’t think its the money issue that’s the problem, but the implications of me paying a girl’s rent. That kind of commitment has me reeling and seeing stars. She’s a good girl, but the cultural differences are pretty difficult to deal with.

You would be surprised, or perhaps you wouldn’t be. Good girls are hard to find, even in a city like Shanghai with a 20 million population. They can be 1)hot, or 2)smart, or 3)nice, or 4)rich, or 5)fun, or 6)culturally similar.  Rarely are they possessing two or more of the above characteristics.  Being a guy, I know how guys really think. You don’t need two or more of the above! you really only need characteristic 1.  If you had 1 + Any, you think you’re in heaven. If you had 2 of the above in addition to 1.  You should be buying a wedding ring right now instead of reading this rant. But what if you didn’t have 1? ahhhh, dilemma eh? what if you had say 2+3+4? What do you do???? Well I’ll tell you what you do, you begin thinking about your future, justifying that she would make a good mother, and she can help you build your empire. But would you really be happy, or would you feel like you are somehow settling? Alright, show of hands, you have a choice between a girl who is 1+2 or a girl who is 2+3+4+5+6, which one would you choose?

Class contrast in juicy bars

before going to korea, i had no idea what a juicy bar or juicy girl was. but now after experiencing them personally, i understand that they’re just a form of hostess club. a form that’s probably less classy than a hostess club in general, but that probably depends on where exactly u go. (more…)

Speed Dating Shanghai

Speed Dating

Last saturday I went to a speed dating event with Manuelo and another female friend who was Dutch Chinese from Holland (“dc girl”). The event rules stipulate that you have 8 minutes to talk to a girl, after 8 minutes, you rotate to the next girl. from 7:30 to 10, you should be able to talk to about 20 girls. I got there at around 7 and met my dc girl to first have a light drink while waiting for Manuelo to show up… (more…)

KY intense

i’ve seen this going around, but figured i’d post it anyways.

it’s nice to see an asian couple on tv having great sex, but the couple is stereotypically “reserved” and the need for a lubricant seems to imply the guy can’t typically satisfy the girl or that the girl needs help getting past her shyness. 1 step forward 1 step back?

Stories of Prostitution

Last night I had dinner with a friend here. Lets just call him Manuelo . Manuelo  is Chinese, 27, worked for a while as a engineer in China and is soon going to the states for a graduate engineering program.

During dinner, the topic for its own mysterious reasons turned onto prostitution in Asia. Manuelo confided in me that he has paid prostitutes for service 7 time in his life. Naturally, here I am posting Manuelo’s experiences on our blog. The stories were just too interesting.  (more…)

Of losses

5060_greek_soldier_armed_with_a_sword_and_shield

It is on the mornings of great love and great loss in which I rise with the most passion for life. I love you Helena, I love you so much that you are the first thing in my mind in those moments before I first gain consciousness. You stand there, pointing to that stitched cartoon soldier on your favorite pink shirt, and you say “他是我的小兵“. Slowly light would filter in and you would fade away…

But during those moments. I grasp towards you desperately, clawing and straining to reach you. The light behind me, growing ever stronger, pushes you away. You and your little guardian, perched over your heart, recede into the remaining darkness. I yell and cry for you, but the light envelops me, and the light is so loud and bright, more persistent than all my protests. I am drowning my dear Helena. I can’t breath.

I only have one urgent thought in my mind,  to trade places with that 小兵. I want to be your guardian, protecting you, keeping warm your heart. If I could only give away everything, I would. This mind, this consciousness, I will trade it all to push back this terrible light. Then I can rest with you, close to your bosom. And you can point to me, and you can whisper softly in my ear, “你永远是我的小兵“.

It is on the mornings of great love and great loss in which I rise with the most clarity.

Tuesday night @ Sasha

Last night I went to a bar called Sasha with several friends. There I met this girl who worked as an analyst for Wexford, a hedge fund in New York. She was visiting Shanghai only for a week and was originally born here like me. We had an instant connection.  She was a very passionate and intelligent girl. And from the moment we met to the time the gathering dissipated, we talked non stop.

dscn2427

Our topic? the quarter-life crisis. The reference was originally derived from a mid-life crisis, but I believe that times have changed for many of us. There is no mid, there is no quarter, personally, the questioning of purpose and life began as early as middle school.  And if I am correct, will go on til the end of my days. There is no quarter-life crisis, there is no mid-life crisis, there is only crisis. Or better yet, there is only the constant struggle to understand what can not be understood. That’s life.

It was interesting to find that so many more people are beginning to feel the dissonance. As one person began to confess, so too did many others join in. One by one the room fell like dominoes.
