the national sleep foundation polled ppl of different racial groups and found that there were both similarities and differences. all groups reported getting less sleep than they wanted, and the vast majority of every group knew that lack of sleep led to health disorders. with that said, here’s the interesting stuff.

While watching TV was the activity most often performed every night or almost every night for all ethnic groups within one hour of going to bed, Asians were less likely than their counterparts to report doing so (52% vs. 75% Blacks, 72% Hispanics and 64% Whites).

Asians were much more likely to have been on the computer or Internet every night or almost every night than the other ethnic groups in the hour before bed (51% vs. 22% Whites, 20% Blacks and 20% Hispanics).

Meanwhile, Blacks were much more likely to have reported praying or doing another religious activity during this time every night or almost every night than their counterparts (71% vs. 45% Hispanics, 32% Whites and 18% Asians).

Hispanics tended to complete household chores every night or almost every night more often in the hour before bed time than their counterparts (41% vs. 33% Blacks, 25% Whites and 24% Asians).

Blacks (10%) and Hispanics (10%) were both more likely to report having sex every night or almost every night in the one hour before they went to bed than Whites (4%) and Asians (1%). [尸zed: oh come on...]

Asians were the least likely ethnic group to have consumed alcohol within one hour of bed time every night or almost every night (1% vs. 7% Whites, 4% Blacks and 4% Hispanics).

Whites are most likely to sleep with their pets — as well as more likely to sleep with their spouse or significant others. Sixteen percent of white respondents say they sleep with a pet, and 72% say they sleep with their partners. In comparison, only 4% of Asians, 4% of Hispanics, and 2% of black people let the pet on the bed. But the space isn’t always saved for a spouse or partner, apparently. Only 48% of blacks and Asians sleep with a ‘’significant other,” and 54% of Hispanics.

Recession-related stresses affected sleep to different degrees, with Hispanics and blacks more affected than whites or Asians.

Overall, Asians were the most likely ethnic group to say they get a good night’s sleep at least a few nights a week (84% vs. 72% Hispanics, 68% Whites and 66% Blacks), and Asians were also the least likely to have been asked about or discussed sleep with a HCP or doctor (31% vs. 56% Whites, 48% Hispanics and 45% Blacks).

i the skimmed about half the report which is huge. answering all the questions must’ve been a big snore.

AoR writes about the commonly perceived advantage east asians have in visio-spatial (math) iq. i’m not going to spend much time on that b/c i haven’t seen much evidence to the contrary, and at least they do alright in competition. but something that isn’t especially clear to me is the evidence on a lag on verbal scores.

as AoR cited, 97 asian-american verbal iq is a number i’ve seen bandied about in the bell curve, and richard lynn’s comparisons of different national verbal scores show asians with a lower verbal. exactly how the tests were done however is something i still don’t know. the lower verbal score for asian-americans might, in part, be due to a slower start in english b/c their parents spoke an asian language at home. a friend of mine took an iq test at his school’s urging after arriving in the states from taiwan as a young teenager. he did well on the visio-spatial part of the test, but horrible on the verbal. he said that he barely understood half the english questions at the time b/c he had only recently arrived. by the end of high school, he was in AP english and graduated salutatorian in his class (an ABC grabbed 1st).

i don’t know that these types of issues played any part in the bell curve’s numbers, but it does give one pause. the other issue is how iq researchers compare verbal scores across nations. cross-cultural comparisons in verbal ability seem problematic at best. i’ve wanted to look into this for a long time but just haven’t found a cheap copy of lynn’s books (it costs freaking $80 and isn’t in the library). anyone know of good ebook torrent sites?

anyways, the test evidence is sketchy at best on an asian verbal lag in the US. if the verbal sections of high school standardized tests are considered a proxy for verbal iq, in recent years, asian-americans have just about eliminated the verbal gap if not reversed it. i noted in the comments of my post a year ago that high school asians who were citizens scored higher on SAT verbal that white citizens. the scores for graduate school tests did show a noticeable gap, but those tests didn’t separate citizen vs non-citizen or primary english speaker vs non-primary.

since then, there has been more evidence that asians don’t lag in verbal. recent raw ACT test scores showed asians outperformed whites in every category including verbal ones, even if raw SAT scores did not reflect this. different parts of the nation take different tests. it may be the case that the whites in ACT taking regions aren’t as bright as whites in SAT taking regions.

an upcoming report on california schools says that “72 percent of Asian students in eighth grade were testing at grade level in English in 2009, outperforming their white peers by 6 percent. Chinese students scored highest, with 81 percent achieving grade level proficiency.” there are 15% more chinese students testing at their grade level in english than their white counterparts. that’s rather shocking to me actually. i don’t know if this performance surplus extends all the way through high school as the full report hasn’t been released.

regardless, it does bring us back to this point: east asians might not have any gap in verbal iq compared to whites. in fact, they surpass whites in some proxy tests. it’s possible that a quibble about 3 pts in verbal iq is so unimportant as to be not worth investigating, but according to la griff, the small verbal lag is the reason that east asian democracies haven’t surpassed western democracies in per capita GDP.

We had a small talk, and by small I mean it dragged on for two days fully integrated with abundant supplies of awkwardness and guilt. I am moving all my stuff out today, luckily it wasn’t too much, (just some clothing) and my own place is only a few blocks away. She was sad to see me go, and in an attempt to comfort her, I said that I would still be coming to visit all the time. She proceeded to ask that I didn’t take everything away as it would make her very sad. This is when the moment of sacrifice occurred. I don’t know why I did it, perhaps my mind was numb from the 2 day battle. My body was at that very moment positioned so that I was looking directly at it, and my mouth simply blurted out, “Don’t worry, I’ll leave my Xbox360 here.”

Why do you hate me so, mouth. Who is your master, and why does he wish to cause me such unnecessary pain?

Being a man of my words, I am forced to leave you behind today, my cracked and beloved child. I will try to visit you often, but do not worry, for before long I will attempt to rescue you from your predicament.

My friend’s girlfriend, a Shanghainese girl, recently gave him, an ABC, an ultimatum. By May, my friend needs to decide whether he will marry her or not. If he decides against marriage, or if he is unsure, they will stop seeing each other by May. Last week, the girl borrowed 2k from my friend. “To pay back credit card payments” she said. This week, the girl came around with a brand new double eyelid surgery. Guess where that 2k went…When asked why she got the surgery, the girl replied, “I did it for you, so I can look prettier for you!” I suggested my friend ask for a breast implant to go along with the eye lid surgery. When they began dating a year ago, he msned me and wrote “hey, I am really happy with this girl, she is cute and actually offered to pay for our meals!” Now he says, “One of the things I don’t like about my gf is that she never pays for anything, it really has me wondering what would happen if we get married. Would she just quit her job and sit at home all day?”

I have been seeing this girl, I stay over at her place quite often in the past month. I have my own place, but I suppose its easier and less lonely staying over with someone else. She’s Chinese, from Harbin (Northern China) region. she is cute, street smart, does house-work, has a good job. Sounds great right, well one of the problems is that she doesn’t get along at all with my English speaking friends. She does speak English herself, but the cultural differences are fairly noticeable. A few days ago she asked me to pay for rent since I have been staying over at her place so frequently. I declined, “no thanks dear” I don’t think its the money issue that’s the problem, but the implications of me paying a girl’s rent. That kind of commitment has me reeling and seeing stars. She’s a good girl, but the cultural differences are pretty difficult to deal with.

You would be surprised, or perhaps you wouldn’t be. Good girls are hard to find, even in a city like Shanghai with a 20 million population. They can be 1)hot, or 2)smart, or 3)nice, or 4)rich, or 5)fun, or 6)culturally similar. Rarely are they possessing two or more of the above characteristics. Being a guy, I know how guys really think. You don’t need two or more of the above! you really only need characteristic 1. If you had 1 + Any, you think you’re in heaven. If you had 2 of the above in addition to 1. You should be buying a wedding ring right now instead of reading this rant. But what if you didn’t have 1? ahhhh, dilemma eh? what if you had say 2+3+4? What do you do???? Well I’ll tell you what you do, you begin thinking about your future, justifying that she would make a good mother, and she can help you build your empire. But would you really be happy, or would you feel like you are somehow settling? Alright, show of hands, you have a choice between a girl who is 1+2 or a girl who is 2+3+4+5+6, which one would you choose?

before going to korea, i had no idea what a juicy bar or juicy girl was. but now after experiencing them personally, i understand that they’re just a form of hostess club. a form that’s probably less classy than a hostess club in general, but that probably depends on where exactly u go.

so the first of these clubs i went to was outside seoul. the street on which this club is located is filled with other such clubs. at night, the street is bathed in the sickly glow of flashing neon. walking down the street, u get the feel of a red light district. girls in slutty clothes beckon from half-opened doorways.

the particular juicy club i entered had a side business. they ran a fake handbag shop next door. if u wanted any of the name brand stuff, they’d open a side door leading into the club. they led u past the bored and dull eyed juicy girls and into the women’s bathroom. through this bathroom, they unlock a door into the fake handbag storage area. but i digress. this night there was no buying of handbags. we were there to enjoy the completion of our work for this trip.

the bar was probably typical of any chincy establishment that tried to pry young drunk foreign soldiers of their pay. it had a small dancefloor with a noreibang/karaoke machine. these juicy girls did more than just drink with their patrons, they sang. the girls were all filipino and all had kids back in the philippines. they were each recruited by the korean mamasan (madam equivalent) and had signed contracts that determined the lengths of their stay. they lived in dorm equivalents above the bar and were not allowed to leave under normal circumstances. girls who had been at this club for an entire year had only been to seoul once, and the only part they saw was the subway station. they had to spend $250 of their own money to do even that.

typically, the only way they have free time is if they sell 15 drinks in a night. effectively, this means they never have free time. this is what poor girls from economically backward nations are reduced to in a capitalist world. these were the dregs of juicy girls. they looked prematurely old, dressed in slutty skin revealing clothes even if they were overweight, and were very unattractive. instead of inspiring any kind of lust or even minor enjoyment, it was more pity i felt. i was pretty happy to leave.

example of filipino juicy girls

a short time later that same trip, we visited another juicy bar in a district of seoul known as itaewon. the area is very touristy, has a number of nice restaurants and some foreign embassies are located nearby. the difference in the bars was that korean college girls worked the bar. they were all hot and all spoke english to cater to the soldiers and foreign businessmen there. i chatted with yu han na, one of the hottest girls there. she had a beautiful face, perfect skin, great teeth, and her dress was elegant and not slutty. it was amazing to me that they charged patrons the same amount to buy girls a drink here as they did in the other bar. i learned that the circumstances of the girls here was much much better. the girls in this bar mostly worked for spare change. she could come in whenever she wanted to make some extra dough. she was an art history student, so she was even cultured and told me about the art exhibits from europe, china and japan that had come through seoul.

example of what the korean juicy girls looked like to me (actually a kpop group)

interestingly, she told me her views on her patrons. she might easily have been lying, but the resentment i saw in her eyes makes me think she wasn’t. she also knew my ethnicity and citizenship and some of what she said wouldn’t necessarily have ingratiated her to me. she said the patrons she hated the most were US soldiers. they would constantly be trying to touch her, ask how much she charged for sex, and wanted to take her to a hotel, but she wasn’t there for that. she was only willing to drink and talk with her customers. she preferred older foreign businessmen as customers b/c they treated her with a little more respect. i asked her point blank if she was into foreign white guys and she said she wasn’t. she liked homegrown korean men. i couldn’t help but smile at that answer. but maybe she knew me better than i knew myself, b/c i bought her another drink for that. haha.

it was remarkable to see how much things changed with a little physical distance. in seoul, hot, very desirable korean women worked these bars for seemingly the same pay as the ugly, very undesirable filipino women outside of seoul (don’t mistake me here… filipinos can be attractive, but these filipinos weren’t). the koreans were students who wanted money to buy expensive handbags and visit art museums while the filipinos were selling fake handbags and saving to feed their multiple kids back home. i would imagine that the filipino girls would love to work at the place in seoul, but they simply wouldn’t be able to compete. the girls in seoul might be able to command a higher fee outside of seoul, but it wouldn’t be worth it b/c they’d have to leave seoul and change colleges. in the US suburbs, it’s not often a middle class person encounters such widely varying disparities. i’m sure this in typical of any large urban area, but it was new and interesting to me at least.
